Class code 0042 generally describes landscape gardening and installation, while 9102 applies to lawn maintenance. NCCI reported that 69% of the inspected 0042 policies in its 2023 research were reclassified to 9102 because the actual work was maintenance. Tree pruning and removal can lead to 0106 and should not be buried in a lawn-care description. Final classification belongs to the carrier or NCCI.
Coral Springs crews often move among planned residential communities, commercial properties and common areas. Mowing and edging on a fixed route differs from installing plants, grading beds, laying sod or building irrigation. A company that does both needs contracts and payroll records that show who did what.
Where landscape claims develop

Records to gather before quoting
- Revenue and payroll by maintenance, installation, irrigation and tree work.
- Employee job descriptions and route or project records.
- Equipment list, trailer practice and driver controls.
- Subcontractor certificates and written scopes.
- Heat, lightning, PPE and machine-guarding procedures.
“Occasional tree work” still needs a definition
A Coral Springs maintenance crew may prune shrubs from the ground, remove palm fronds from a ladder or cut large limbs with rigging. Those are not interchangeable descriptions. Record maximum working height, climbing or bucket use, chainsaw use and whether the work is sold separately. If a tree contractor is hired, keep the contract and certificate for the full work period.
Irrigation deserves its own description too. Routine head replacement within a maintenance route differs from trenching and installing a new system. The goal is not to multiply codes; it is to prevent a broad “landscaping” label from concealing the operation that drives the audit.
